One of the “Nine from Aberdeen,” who trained with Royal Engineers at the beginning of EOD history. Popularly known as “Dick,” he was a training officer until late 1944, when he volunteered to lead 209th BD Squad in the Philippines. In June 1945, he was KIA along with several squad members on Mandog Hill, where they were disarming Japanese depth charges used as landmines. Dick left behind a new wife, and his mother and sisters were never told the full story. To them, he was always “missing in action.”
